Adventure Ecology causes massive flooding in Second Life

The MMORPG Second Life by Linden Lab is one of the most popular games on the market with 5 million subscribers as of last March 27. Essentially a virtual world where anything is possible, it has become the subject of much talk and controversy.

Recently, it has become a staging ground for groups who want their messages to be heard. Certain groups have gone so far as to stage terrorists attacks and political protests online. The organization Adventure Ecology didn't do anything as radical as that. They simply decided to flood various parts of the virtual world last April 4.

London, Amsterdam, Ibiza, Tokyo and other regions in Second Life were subjected to a sudden flash flood which thankfully lasted for only a few hours. The flooding of the areas was done to show the financial, and more importantly, environmental implications of global warming.

ABCs to SATs

Baldwin Arts and Academics: Seventh-grader Albert Allenback placed third in the state Readers' Digest Word Challenge Vocabulary Contest. The entire student body participates in the annual contest. The competition was held in Mobile.

Blount Elementary: The students will take the Alabama Reading and Math Test and the SAT state assessments this week.

Brewbaker Intermediate: The school recently held its third nine-week Honor's Assemblies. Parents were invited to attend.

Brewbaker Junior High: The boys' basketball program was awarded the Central Alabama Officials Association's Sportsmanship Trophy. This prestigious honor is bestowed to junior high and middle school sports programs that officials feel exemplify sportsman-like behavior.

Catoma Elementary: For the second consecutive year, the school was named a Master School by Renaissance Learning Accelerated Reader Reading.

Castles In The Virtual Air

Imagine a world in which you can be your own God. You can choose your own gender, color, size, or even species. Instead of driving your car to work, you can fly. Today, you can do all this from the chair of your computer desk with a program called Second Life.

Created by Linden Lab in 2003, Second Life is a “3-D online digital world imagined, created, and owned by its residents" that is free to join. Its roughly five million users create avatars, which are virtual character representations of themselves that can be anything from men and women to butterflies. Second Life is not a game so much as it is an “online community" because there is no specific goal or winner. Users are able to interact, create buildings, and buy land on the Second Life globe.

With such possibilities, Second Life fosters unusual creativeness.

Forget Brits. American Dips Now Fair Game

As negotiations over the 15 captured Brits continue an Iranian diplomat, who had been kidnapped in Iraq a couple of months ago, is suddenly freed and returned to his embassy in Baghdad on Tuesday.

That diplomat, Jalal Sharafi, the second secretary at Iran’s mission in Baghdad, is still not sure who kidnapped him. He was snatched off the street on February 4th, in broad day light in a predominately Shiite, middle class neighborhood of Baghdad.
