Foreign News Briefs

Conservative Nicolas Sarkozy and Socialist Segolene Royal jumped into their presidential runoff campaign Monday by wooing voters who deserted them for a farmer's son who championed the political middle. Centrist Francois Bayrou didn't make the runoff, but his strong third-place showing in Sunday's first round of balloting could make him a king-maker if he throws his support behind the law-and-order former interior minister or to the leftist with a chance of being France's first woman president in the May 6 runoff. Final results Monday gave Sarkozy 31 percent of the vote and Royal just under 26 percent.

Steelheads Even Series Wtih 4-1 Victory Over Wranglers In Game Two

Boise, ID - Four unanswered goals, including two tallies by Lance Galbraith, pushed the Steelheads to a 4-1 win over the Las Vegas Wranglers in front of 2,425 fans at Qwest Arena on Monday night to even the best-of-seven conference semi-finals series at one game apiece.

The win is the Steelheads (5-3) third on home ice in the 2007 playoffs and it snaps the Wranglers (5-1) ECHL-best, 18-game winning streak in the process.

For the second straight game, the Wranglers tallied first, breaking a scoreless tie midway through the first period. After Steelheads' goaltender Steve Silverthorn (23 saves) stopped a shot from the slot by Tyler Mosienko, Aki Seitsonen got to the loose puck and fed it back into the crease where Mosienko knocked it in for his fourth of the playoffs and his first of the series.

Weekend Web Column: Size Matters In GPS

Size matters when it comes to consumer electronics. Too big and you don't want to carry the device around with you all the time. Too small and it becomes too hard to see and too hard to use. The new Pocket Loox N100 from Chicago-based Navigon is GPS device that straddles that increasingly fine line.

At first glance, the N100 is a jewel. Weighing in at just under four ounces, it is light enough to forget you have it in your pocket. It's size -- 2.5 by 3.5 inches by a little more than a half-inch thick -- is the smallest of the stand-alone GPS units we've seen. There are only two buttons on the shell of the device: on/off and hold. There are also a mini USB port and a headphone jack. Hidden under a rubber cover on the back is a GPS antenna connector. The hardware is manufactured by Fujitsu-Siemens.

Trust is at the Core of the New Web Marketing

One of this things that struck me (again) while I was at Search Engine Strategies in New York earlier this month was that the world of search marketing, and Web marketing in general, is becoming more and more like old-fashioned marketing.

A few years ago, when I thought about Web marketing, I thought about buying links (yes, I used to buy links), swapping links en masse, and building massively optimized Web pages. This, of course, does not sound like conventional marketing at all, and it wasn't. Web marketers all had our own little esoteric roles, as if we were living in a remote cave in Borneo.

We were our own animals. Other people could not relate to us, because we were so different, and our work existed in a vacuum. But we were all happy because there were piles of money to be made, and we were living on a Wild West frontier where the rules you lived by were the rules you made yourself.

Hands-on with Orb 2.0

Back in 2005, CNET reviewed Orb, a software package that promised to let users access media files located on their home PC and stream them to any other broadband-connected computer and even some mobile devices. Orb scored a 7.0--"very good"--and that was that--except that Orb has offered some pretty compelling upgrades in the meantime.

Since our original review, the company has rolled out Orb 2.0 (fall 2006), which is essentially a Web 2.0 version of the product. You still run a small server applet on your home PC that catalogs and streams your media files--video, audio, and photos--but you can now access all of these files via a single Web page (available at mycast.orb.com). It's a user-customizable, AJAX-based page that's similar to the personalized home page that you can make at Google, Yahoo, Live.com, and elsewhere.
