Burley: There's nowhere to hide

Players are only human. They are effected if their employment is thrown into doubt, if 18,000 people are on their backs week in week out, if they are kept in the dark about important issues. Yours and mine proffesional performances would suffer under alot less pressure than that. What we should be doing is showing those who turn out every week on the pitch, those who turn out everyday to train, that we are behind them and stop baying for blood. We are Southampton Football Club supporters, so lets support Southampton Football Club. Also, an obseveration. Two years ago, when George Burley took over as manager of our club, when we were being torn to pieces every week, when the standard of football was worse than most sunday morning sides serve up, when the squad was being ripped to shreds, we were all behind him.

European Commission Proposes Single European Telecoms Market/Regulator

The European Commission officially adopted proposals for a reform of the EU telecoms rules with the aim of creating a single European telecom market with a consistent set of regulations covering consumers in all 27 EU Member States. The plan calls for a new European Telecom Market Authority to govern national telecoms regulators in ensuring that market rules and consumer regulation are applied consistently, independently and without protectionism. To become law, the Commission proposals will now need to be approved by the European Parliament and the EU Council of Ministers. The European Commission believes the approval could be attained by the end of 2009.

Specific components of the reform proposal include: New consumer rights such as the right to switch telecoms operators within 1 day; the right to transparent and comparable price information; the possibility to call freephone numbers from abroad; and a more effective single European emergency number 112.

Dale Ryman

Pats take out Packers in SB XLII. Reasons are listed below in my previous blog.

Now on to Roger Clemens. This guy is digging himself even deeper. First off, did you get a chance to listen to the recorded conversation between he and his ex-trainer, Brian McNamee? Apparently in Texas and New York you can record a conversation is one person consents, and Clemens consented. What a load a manure! Clemens tried to coax the guy into saying something like he lied, but he never did. Therefore, why even play the recording at the press conference?! I think he made himself look worse b/c he recorded the call, didn't get anything out of it, and still played it. Clemens asked him, why did you say I used steroids? You can take that 1 of 2 ways. "Why did you rat me out" or "why did you make up lies?" McNamee offered to go to the press conference, and Clemens never took him up on his offer.

The Mystery of Eli Manning

Stephen A. Smith is the hardest-working man in sports show business. The ubiquitous basketball pundit appears on ESPN about 10 times a day as a regular on the show NBA Fastbreak, a guest commentator on SportsCenter, and a pundit on ESPNEWS. This fall, he was also a judge on the network's American Idol knockoff, Dream Job. He also has a day job: top sports columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer. In a recent Philadelphia magazine profile of Smith, Inquirer sports editor Jim Jenks said the multitasking hadn't affected his newspaper work. "I don't know how long this is going to last, but he puts the column first. He knows it gives credibility to what he does on TV." Jenks offered an example of Smith's dedication: On the night of the NBA draft, Smith BlackBerryed in his column between television appearances.

The Chris Webber Karma Could Hit Pacers’ Coach Jim O’Brien

He clearly was toward the end of his career. It became very apparent he wasn't going to give the 76ers everything we had hoped for.

Webber didn't practice at all that year prior to coming to us. He didn't practice at all the previous six weeks. I think he was just at the point where he didn't necessarily feel where he was in need of practice, or could practice, or couldn't practice and play at the same time.

"He said, 'Coach, I don't do the low-post thing anymore,''' O’ Brien recalled. "We just made a major trade to bring in this (6-foot-10) guy and he said, 'No.' I said, 'Yes, you do.''

My Quick Take: Not exactly a glowing reference for C-Webb, huh? O’Brien, his former coach in Philly, is right. After surgery, Webber’s game changed. Shifting from the post to a jump-shooting big man limited his effectiveness.

U@Play: 'WolfQuest' is a free game that combines fun with learning

One of the things that video games can teach is a point of view. For example, from my experience playing "Everquest," I've got a pretty good idea of what life is like as an elf. He has pointy ears and gets beat up a lot.

Maybe that's not a good example, but in the free, downloadable computer game "WolfQuest: Amethyst Mountain," you'll get a realistic gander at what it's like to be a wolf on the prowl in Yellowstone National Park.

Kids will be tricked into actually learning about nature, conservation and the inner workings of the pack.

The game is intended for children 10 to 13 years old, but it's also fun for teens and adults.

"WolfQuest" is the first video game funded by the National Science Foundation, and it was created with the goal of showing our video-gamer generation how wolves hunt and socialize in the wild.

Business Briefs

BOSTON — TJX Cos. was warned it had inadequate safeguards to protect credit card data the year before hackers broke into the discount retailer's systems and unearthed information from an estimated 100 million credit cards, banks that are suing TJX allege in a court filing. Despite the 2004 warning about compliance with credit card industry standards, TJX failed to fix many of the problems before hackers first broke into the company's systems in July 2005, according to the filing late Thursday in U.S. District Court in Boston. "This report identified numerous serious deficiencies at TJX, including specifically violations. TJX did not remedy many of these deficiencies," the filing says. Sherry Lang, a spokeswoman for Framingham, Mass.-based TJX, declined to comment Friday. .
