| Gimme candy corn, scarecrow, pumpkins and the Lion King
Yup, I'll take all four after reading this Halloween Spokesman, which had lots of treats for early-morning consumption. After all the fun yesterday responding to Doug Clark's satire about the Broadway musical's ubiquitous mind-piercing ad, I enjoyed reading Jim Kershner's review Lion King Dazzle this morning and wouldn't mind attending the production. He provided enough visual detail to convince me that it must be spectacular. I also enjoyed reading Hilary Kraus' pieceking of commerce which provides a look into the added financial bonanza that local businesses will be enjoying during the show's run. Her story also serves as a reminder for out-of-towners who may be coming into Spokane during this period to plan ahead for parking, dining and sleeping overnight.

PRESS RELEASE: Blast Off With Planet Busters
Glasgow, UK, January 22nd 2008. Many videogames feature explosions – big explosions - but none of them have ever come close to the big bang of Planet Busters, the brand new PC title from Slam Games. Planet Busters is a new casual game that combines fast, simple gameplay, with the chance to avenge mankind, rearrange the universe and – well – blow a lot of it up. After a sneak attack by the evil Scourge, Earth is gone. Disintegrated. Vapourised. Nothing more than a slowly drifting cloud of interstellar dust. As one of the few survivors of this unprovoked assault – you're pretty much furious. Thankfully you have a well-armed spaceship and time on your hands for a spot of revenge. So you swear to chase the Scourge to the ends of the galaxy, communicating in the only language they understand – violent destruction.

A gameday in the life
OAKLAND -The life of an NBA player is worthy of envy. Millions of dollars. Celebrity access. Plenty of free time. It's a life of itch-scratching and thrill-seeking. It's a life of luxury and abundance. Most people would do anything to be in a player's shoes for just one day. Well, if Warriors guard Kelenna Azubuike is a typical NBA player, game day would be the wrong day to do so. Earlier this month, on a day when the Warriors were to host the Memphis Grizzlies, Azubuike allowed a reporter and a photographer a glimpse at his daily routine. For Azubuike, game days are all about relaxing. Call it the calm before the storm. He purposely keeps his life tranquil in the hours before tipoff. The goal is to preserve every ounce of energy before the real fun starts at 7:30 p.m.
The absence of Plan B
The last time Stephane Dion visited our editorial board, a few months ago, the topic of Afghanistan got us talking in circles. We had to communicate to our NATO allies, the Liberal leader said, that it was up to them to assume combat responsibilities in Kandahar from February 2009 forward. But what if our allies continued to pass the buck, as they had to date? Then we would tell them we were pulling out. So we would leave Afghanis in the most vulnerable region of their country to fend for themselves? Hopefully that wouldn't happen, because other NATO countries would take over. But what if they didn't? Well, they pretty much had to. In other words, there was no Plan B. And for the considerable work put into the Manley panel's report on what to do with this mission - and some very lucid recommendations therein, particularly on CIDA, military equipment and domestic communication - the same problem persists.
Sony, Skype calling gamers
The consumer electronics industry has for many years now tried to shoe-horn a game (some would say game-like) experience on the mobile phone device, but this year, Sony swims upstream in the same waters. It has taken the PSP handheld game platform and turned it into a mobile phone -- albeit with limitations. But the value proposition for consumers is win-win. .
