McAfee predicts 2008's worst security threats

McAfee has forecast that nine security threats will increase in 2008, while it expects ad-serving software known as adware to decrease.

The forecasts are based on the development of attacks seen in the firm's own lab. Greg Day, McAfee security analyst, said that Web 2.0 sites would increasingly be used by cyber criminals to distribute malware or steal volumes of data. Web 2.0 sites offering everything from consumer social networking to business relationship management could prove an easy form of attack, being "the internet version of a shopping mall or crowded city," Day said.

The Storm Worm, also known as Nuwar, set a precedent in how botnets are likely to develop, said McAfee. Storm Worm’s creators "released thousands of variants and changed coding techniques, infection methods and social engineering schemes far more than any other threat in history" and "created the largest peer-to-peer botnet ever" said the report.

Zambrano vs. Barrett: The slugout in the dugout

It has come to this with the Cubs: Unable to beat other teams, they have started beating on each other. Unable to settle things in private meetings, they have taken to public airwaves.

Frustration, then futility and finally fisticuffs.

In the midst of losing their fifth straight game and 11th in the last 15—8-5 to Atlanta on Friday at Wrigley Field—batterymates Carlos Zambrano and Michael Barrett tussled in the dugout and then apparently had an all-out set-to in the clubhouse.

Layton pushing for federal election

MONTEBELLO, QUE. — NDP Leader Jack Layton is advocating a federal election to replace Stephen Harper as prime minister, saying a change in political direction is urgently needed.

The eagerness of New Democrats for a trip to the polls is in sharp contrast to comments emerging from Liberal MPs this week, who are suggesting economic concerns could justify putting election plans on hold.

Mr. Layton told reporters he doesn't understand the "constantly shifting" positions of the Liberal Party.

"We won't sit in our seats when we are called to vote," Mr. Layton said. "We want a change in political direction on the major issues of the country. If Mr. Harper is prepared, in the context of a minority government, to change his direction on fundamental questions, we can continue.

EDITOR'S CHOICE

After ignoring Kingston in 2006 and then branding the borough a flaccid penis last year, Time Out magazine has agreed to include the borough in its new guide.

There was outrage when the Royal borough was snubbed in the 2006 edition of the guide, and the situation only got worse when Time Out ran an insubstantial 10-point guide to the area in June of last year.

The piece offered an unsavoury explanation as to why Kingston had been left out, stating: "Time Out did a Bobbitt and cut the flaccid penis that is the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames off the map of the capital."

Franklin honors King's direction

Hunter was both a Martin Luther King scholarship recipient and a member of the New Jersey Orators.

Hunter delivered an address tying King's work and legacy to the challenges of today.

King "was more than a dreamer," Hunter said. "He was someone who lived for others. . . . We all bear responsibility. . . . The time is now to rise and declare ourselves trustees of the legacy of Dr. King."

Hunter received a standing ovation.

The Need for Speed

I can't get it out of my mind," he recalls. More than 45 people were lying on the ground, witnesses say, many of them suffering massive traumas. Six of them were Gamal's friends.

According to the newspapers, five people died that night. “I counted eight dead people. There was a poor woman and her son who died that night but were never mentioned anywhere," he alleges.

Zumobi Launches Widgety Mobile Web Interface

"What I do like more than anything is the concept of tiles and/or widgets," said JupiterResearch wireless analyst Neil Strother. "What they are onto here is a sort of an organized widget universe and that has some power on the mobile phone. "They tend to be fairly small yet powerful little applications that the user can click on."

Free Report from Keynote Systems 2007 Trends and Observations of the Mobile and Connected World examines how technologies, from the Web to the mobile phone, are specifically impacting key vertical industries, from financial services to new media. Download yours here.
