2007: The Year in Tech

No, not on the same level as with Vista, but it does show that Apple's not perfect.

Prognosis: The rule with Apple operating systems has always been "Never adopt point-oh technologies." Leopard has already had a point upgrade, so soon all will be right with the world.

Event: Daylight Saving Goes Green, Makes Everyone Crazy

Going green isn't easy. A couple of years ago, the U.S. government took the proactive step of passing a law to change daylight saving time so that it begins earlier in the spring and ends later in the fall.

Why? So that Americans would have more daylight hours and burn less energy.

Great idea, except that everyone's technology was programmed to change on the original daylight-saving days. Microsoft sent out patches.

Reshaped Braves aim toward spring training

Isn't FW considering getting a righty to back up Kotsay, like Raji Davis in San Fran? Also, isn't he trying to get more righty power in the OF, like Juan Rivera with the Angels, who's trade value should be very low right now.

Thanks for your reply,

Hammy the Brave

Calls rise for M8 link to airport

With trams, within budget, going ahead and Earl looking decidedly uncertain, now is exactly the right time to revisit the M8 link. It is clear that as the airport itself expands to meet demand then the infrastructure around the terminal must also grow. "The cost of this link, which is only around half-a-mile of road, would be a fraction of the cost of the rail project." Mr Johnston said: "To be frank I was just staggered when I first came to the airport and saw the situation with the approach road. "There are industrial estates with better access. It is our view the M8 extension is vital for improving transport links to the airport. "Public transport improvements are important to the airport but against the backdrop of phenomenal growth we are experiencing they will not be enough. "The roads serving the airport are not fit for purpose and incidents such as the security changes introduced at the weekend illustrated the need to make improvements." It is thought any new road, which has still to be priced, would go between the Claylands and Hermiston junctions on the M8 north to the A8 somewhere between the airport and the RBS headquarters at Gogarburn.

Steve Fossett and Burt Rutan's Ultimate Solo: Behind the Scenes

We couldn't believe it," recalls Karkow, smiling at the memory. "We looked at each other and said, 'This can't be true. We must have left something off.' " But they hadn't. They'd aced the third variable of the Breguet Range Equation.

Karkow, a laconic fellow with a dry sense of humor, immediately sent off an e-mail to Rutan. "We blew the empty weight estimate by over 200 pounds," he reported somberly. The next day, Rutan congratulated the team for being only about 7 percent overweight. Only then did the boss learn that his team had beaten the estimate by 7 percent.

Apple and Google ruled a year to note in your Facebook

The Apple phone is what corporate strategists call a 'game-changer'. It's really a powerful Unix computer in a tiny, sleek package. It happens to make voice calls, but in a way that's the boring bit. More interesting is its wi-fi capabilities and the way it makes web browsing feasible on a small screen. Its only serious drawback on launch was the fact that it is shackled to slow mobile phone networks. Its significance is that, at a stroke, it made everyone else's mobile technology look lame.

Even more intriguing was Apple's success in steam-age bricks-and-mortar retailing. It now has 203 stores worldwide and derives 20 per cent of its revenue from them. In the quarter ending September 2007, Apple reported that its retail stores accounted for $1.25bn of its $6.2bn total revenues, up 42 per cent on the fourth quarter of 2006.

Hillary Stuns--Four Theories

If it's true that the studio only gets half the box office receipts, and the $65 million doesn't include tens of millions in marketing costs, there is no way this movie is making money. ... 1:46 A.M.

The poverty of "Deep Poverty," continued: Brad DeLong agrees that Eric Alterman made a "mistake" when he said that "there has been a sharp increase in those living in extreme poverty." DeLong then asks

But what is the 'good poverty news' in the Census Bureau's report?

If there's good news, I assume it would be mainly that the poverty rate--and the "extreme poverty" rate--seem to have peaked, after the 2000 recession, at a lower level than they peaked after the previous recession. (See this familiar historical chart.) That's a good thing, no? On the other hand, poverty hasn't yet fallen to the low level achieved at the end of the Clinton boom/bubble.
